1000 Guineas Runner-By-Runner Guide
1. Alice Springs
Generally considered the third string for Aiden O'Brien but is not as far behind her two stablemates as the prices may suggest. However she has only won twice with one of those wins being here at Newmarket, being beaten by good horses in top races when defeated. She was a disappointing favourite on seasonal reappearance in 3rd 5 lengths behind Jet Setting, but it isn't too rare for O'Brien's horses to recover quickly from an early season flop. Could hit the frame if it all goes right for her on the day but if not, likely she'll have ample other targets throughout the season.
2. Aljazzi
Has only ran twice. Won a Newmarket maiden on debut and looked to have progressed slightly when 4th on reappearance. Likely too inexperienced.
With a name like Ballydoyle she had to be good and proved that given her ground she is up with the best of her generation, winning the Debutante Stakes over Minding and the Prix Marcel Boussac over 1m. A maiden win over 7f at Newmarket also reads as positive form, but all wins have been on good ground or better. The softer side of the ground isn't necessarily a disadvantage but gives a few of her rivals an advantage over her. Superbly bred.
4. Blue Bayou
Well held by Minding and co in Moyglare. Won a Group 3 at Newmarket over Fireglow which is a plus but would need a few to underperform to hit the frame.
5. Epsom Icon
Winner of a listed race at Newbury to follow up on a fittingly maiden win at Epsom. Likely that is her class.
6. Fireglow
Winner of two listed races, including over a mile here. But she is held by a lot of these.
7. Illuminate
Showed she enjoys running in a big field when winning the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot last year before following up in Newmarket Group 3 just touching off Blue Bayou by a short head. Furthered her claims when she was beaten just 1/2 length by Lumiere next time out in the Cheveley Park but was staying on that day. Her first step up to 1m at the Breeders Cup however was underwhelming back in 6th seeming not to stay the last furlong - it could be end of season form and the Breeders Cup sometimes throws up weird results and if forgiving that run looks a good each way at the odds.
Came into her three year old season as a maiden, but quickly dispatched of that tag at Cork before following up with a strong win n the group three Guineas trial at Leopardstown over an underperforming Alice Springs. She would need to show further improvement to be in the mix but that is in no way out of the question and match fitness has to be a plus.
A lot to like about Lumiere - Her narrow Cheveley Park win over Illuminate looks excellent form in what is usually a good trial for this. Has a lot of speed over 6f and was clear that day at half way before holding on gamely enough to score by half a length. Will go from the front - question is whether she'll stay? Nothing in breeding to suggest so. Backable each way if drifting to that sort of price but otherwise left alone at 11/2
10. Midweek
Really interesting runner for Criquette Head-Maarek. It seems a weird race for a half sister of Treve to turn up in but she shaped fairly well despite being beaten inside the final two furlongs in the Prix Imprudence. Likely to develop into a quality horse but ran green last time and could lack the experience for this.
Easy to make a case for the favourite - dispatching a group 1
field with ease - Minding, with Nathra 2nd
|
Holds the key against most of these and is a deserved favourite following wins in the Fillies Mile (over Nathra, 2nd) Moyglare Stakes (Ballydoyle 2nd, Alice Springs 3rd and Blue Bayou 5th). Her defeat to Ballydoyle previous to that was likely down to her stablemate getting the right ground and on that it looks likely she'll confirm form today. The ratings she has achieved thus far suggest she is well clear - but so was Air Force Blue yesterday! - the proven form over a mile is not always necessary for this race and may be indicative that she'll get further in time. A Galileo filly is yet to win this race, but you'd be hard pressed to find reasons she won't hit the frame.
12. Mix and Mingle
Looked all-out when beaten back in 4th behind Nathra in the Nell Gwyn, but it was an improvement on her two year old runs including a win at Newmarket. Needs a lot more to be involved.
Looked good on seasonal reappearance wining the Nell Gwyn comfortably. It hasn't always been the best trial for this race with only one winner in the last ten years and was well beaten by Minding in the Fillies Mile. Will need to step up to win but a good chance of hitting the frame.
14. Robanne
3rd in Nell Gwyn, 2 lengths behind Nathra - was held up significantly that day but stayed on like she'll enjoy every yard of this. Unlikely she'll have the class but expect her to be closer to Nathra today. She is sired by Paco Boy sire of yesterday's 2000 guineas winner, so I suppose that is a small plus too.
15. Sharja Queen
Well beaten second behind Lumiere on debut and this will be only her third run.

16. Turret Rocks
Very interesting runner for Jim Bolger who trained Dawn Approach to 2000 Guineas success a couple of seasons ago. Ultimately came up short against Ballydoyle in the Prix Marcel Boussac but before that stayed on well to win the May Hill stakes. That gives her a little less to find against some of these.
